Mutual-Aid Fire in the "Park"

Ice Drill

Melrose held its annual ice rescue drills this month. On Feb. 12th Firefighters from all over the town of Schaghticoke meet at Sta. 20. That night they went over the classroom session of this important skill in this rural area. Following this on Sunday the 15th and Thursday the 19th crews spent hours in the water and ice practicing the techniques and skill it takes to pull off this type of rescue. Crews practiced during the day and night to be prepared for the worst. Melrose would like to thank all participating companies.

Signal 30 on Meadow View

At approx. 2320 hours on Jan. 19th, Melrose and its box alarm were toned out for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival of Car 3 it was transmitted as a signal 30, working structure fire. 20-6 was the first piece on scene and made the initial attack on the fire that had spread quickly from the garage to the residence.    Firefighting demands a high level of dedication and professionalism for those who choose it as a career.  A firefighter must possess the courage and stamina to risk their lives for the sake of others.  They must also study long hours and go through extensive periods of training to become effective and efficient professional firefighters.
The job of a firefighter is one of the most personally rewarding careers an individual can have.  There was a line in a movie recently that said, "There are no more heroes left in America."  After, September 11, 2001, most Americans found out who the true heroes are – the firefighters.
This is a profession of helping.  How many jobs can you name where you can go to work and be of service to people continuously?  Whether it is rescuing people from a burning building, caring for their medical needs, extinguishing fires in a home or in a large mercantile building, this profession is all about helping others.
You can apply to the Melrose Fire Company any Thursday at 7p.m. We are always accepting volunteers.
